Where do we go from here...?

As The Bunker evolves, we’ve pushed ourselves to better define our goals. So far, we’ve provided choreographers with the freedom and challenges of unusual venues. We've asked the audience to step outside their comfort zone by giving them agency over their own behavior during events. We've held talkbacks that have encouraged the Bunker community to better articulate the experience of watching live performance—and which have elicited tons of positive feedback. But we haven't gone far enough.

The Bunker Presents is in the process of re-setting its sights. While we're proud of what we've accomplished, our ultimate goal is to build an entire world of experience for both audience and performers. We want to create something that's completely transportive, but only lasts one night.

To reach that goal, we're examining how to best utilize venues with charged and intriguing atmospheres, and how to better partner with designers and builders to deepen everyone's relationship to performance. We hope to move beyond "immersive" dance into a realm where the event can't exist without mutual contribution from performers and viewers.

We're also considering what a co-op model of production might look like: A cooperative investment, where each choreographer shares the financial risk and reward, as well as the production workload, so that no one suffers unduly and everyone profits equally. The Bunker is excited to further explore this idea during brainstorming sessions with the dance community.

We invite you to join us at each subsequent event as we discover ways to push closer to our ideals.

Mission Statement:

The Bunker Presents is a selectively curated, roving dance performance series produced by NYC dance artist Nicole L-G. It was co-founded in 2014 with D.C.-based dance artist Callie Frey.

We produce completed dances in non-traditional venues. We’re interested in performance that uses the moving body as the primary mode of expression.

The Bunker Presents cultivates a curious and committed audience-performer relationship through creative talkbacks that push the audience to build their dance literacy in a supportive environment.
